Melissa Peneycad is Managing Director at the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) where she focuses on developing and administering a leading sustainability and resiliency framework and rating system for all types of infrastructure, including PPPs, known as Envision. At ISI, Melissa is head of the organization's third-party verification program, a program that has verified the sustainability and resiliency of more than 133 projects around the world with another 130+ registered for and undergoing verification, collectively representing more than $US160 billion in sustainable development. Melissa also leads business development, research, and partnerships. In 2021, she launched Envision Canada, a partnership with Canada's leading civil engineering association - the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering - to accelerate the use of sustainable infrastructure practices in Canada.
For nearly two years, Melissa co-chaired a United Nations-led initiative to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through PPPs. She led the international working group responsible for developing a methodology to evaluate PPPs for their contributions to five 'People-first' outcomes aligned with the SDGs, i.e., People-First PPPs. This methodology was formally endorsed by UNECE Member States on Nov. 30, 2021 & has been tested/put to use in 20+ countries.
In addition to her work at ISI and UNECE, Melissa proudly serves as co-chair of WAPPP's Sustainability and Resiliency Chapter, alongside the esteemed David Dodd of ISRC.
Melissa is passionate about supporting and empowering women in business and in the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry through mentorship and education.
Melissa holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com), Honours degree in strategy and marketing from Queen's University (Canada); a Master in Environmental Studies (MES) degree in business and sustainability from York University (Canada), a Graduate Diploma in Business and Environment from the Schulich School of Business, York University (Canada). Melissa has also taken post-graduate studies in leading with diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) from Northwestern University (USA).
